A "world" Of Unique Desserts

By Marquerite Velasquez

Some of the most popular dessert treats that can be found in the United States, as we know it, are apple pie, ice cream and chocolate chip cookies. But if you go around the world you will find several other popular desserts which come highly interesting as well so let us take a look at some of them.

For example, people in Turkey love a special dish known as tavuk gogsu. The ingredients include chicken breast and milk, and the latter certainly isn't an ingredient that instantly springs to mind when you think of a dessert. The dish is actually a pudding created by finely shredding boiled chicken and mixing it with boiled milk, sugar, salt, coffee and cinnamon.

Another interesting dessert that uses an ingredient that seems more likely to appear in a savory dish is crme de abacate. This Brazilian concoction is a mix of avocado, lime, sugar and heavy cream. In Brazil, it is not unusual to also see ice cream or cold sweet drinks made out of avocadoes or to have this crme de abacate used as a cake filling.

Several other countries may offer some rather exotic dessert treats such as those chocolate-covered insects which are also popular. Take Thailand for instance where people take a fondness for crunchy crickets which are coated in chocolate and even lollipops with a scorpion right in the middle of it. There are countries which serve chocolate grasshoppers or other chocolate-covered insects, such as ants.

Faloodeh is a special dessert that is beloved in Iran. It is made from thin noodles that are created using corn starch, rose water and sugar syrup. It is actually one of the world's oldest cold desserts and probably has been eaten more than 2,000 years. Sometimes this dessert is topped with sour cherry syrup or pistachios. It is commonly available in ice cream shops throughout Iran.

After all of these desserts being featured, it must make you highly motivated to enjoy some of your favorite American treats and a long list of those you will find at YoKuMon, a popular ice cream shop in Culver City.
