America's Favorite Desserts

By Marquerite Velasquez

Can you honestly say "no" when a sweet course is placed in front of you? Truly no meal will ever be complete without dessert for an ender. Whether you choose cakes, pies, ice cream, cookies or something else, you can bet that Americans are never the people to say no to these foods. There are many amazing treats dearly loved by most Americans and here are just a few of the nation's top-rated desserts?

Throughout Europe and North America, the pie has long been a favorite treat. As far back as when the United States was still under English rule most every American household served pie after meals. The most popular flavor is definitely apple pie however the pumpkin pie is not so far behind either. Because of the seemingly never-ending discovery of more flavors and kinds for pies the list of popular pie varieties could go on forever and would include all sorts of fruit pies, as well as pecan pie and chocolate crme pie.

For those with extremely strong cravings for chocolate, brownies or cake are two of the desserts rather hard to resist. Chocolates in any given form are never missing in American households as we all know and see it quite clearly. Chocolate birthday cakes, platters filled with brownies on the Fourth of July and other chocolate treats are definitely an American tradition and brownies and cakes are the favorite ways for Americans to enjoy their chocolate.

As for kids, one of the all-time favorite American desserts would have to be cookies. In truth, Americans of all ages eat millions of cookies each year and the most popular flavor is the chocolate chip cookies, which actually was invented in the U.S. by an innkeeper at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. The innkeepers broke up bars of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate and stirred them into her cookie batter. The result was an instant sensation and is the reason why Nestle began making chocolate chips and why they are known as Toll House Morsels.

Of course, like the poem says, we all scream for ice cream and this is certainly true in the United States where ice cream shops are all around us. Vanilla has been a favorite flavor for more than a century, but flavors such as Cookies n' Crme and chocolate are next in line. In addition to a simple ice cream cone, Americans love sundaes, root beer floats, ice cream sandwiches and just about any ice cream treat they can find.

Now if all that talks about desserts particularly ice cream has made you crave for some, you can always have the best ice cream treats at YoKuMon, a Culver City ice cream shop. At YoKuMon not only do you enjoy an abundance of flavors of ice cream, they also offer shakes, sundaes and shaved ice. Their most popular item is their famous $2 ice cream cookie sandwich. These special gourmet ice cream sandwiches begin with two freshly baked cookies, and they offer more than a half-dozen varieties of homemade cookies. You can mix and match cookie flavors and ice cream flavors to create your own custom treat.
