Significant Issues To Note Concerning New York IRP Registration

By Joseph King

The United States is linked with an extensive road system that passes through many different jurisdictions. These independent areas have own set of rules and regulations that govern all transport systems. This means that there are different rules. However, this road network was put up to establish business and other economic activities that link different places. Hence, the importance of coming up with a common agreement to help govern and simplify transport. This reduces disagreements and squabbles while helping to promote trade. New York IRP registration is done at the counter office in Albany.

International Registration Plan is an agreement between most of the states found in continental United States, District of Columbia plus all Canadian provinces. It allows registration of any commercial vehicles, which travel to more than two of these jurisdictions. This agreement is put in place to help ease commercial transport and control power squabbles. Albany, NY has a customer care counter that handles all the relevant issues.

A person wishing to incorporate their vehicle in this agreement must pay a fee. This is done in one of the jurisdictions. They are then issued with certificates proving membership, apportionment plates as well as cab cards. These can be used anywhere within the member areas. Cab cards list all the places that the vehicles can operate. All monies paid are shared within all the relevant jurisdictions through a system of apportionment. They are divided according to the percentage of total fleet miles that trucks operate in each place.

Vehicles that are required to register with the Albany, NY office are commercial ones that carry people and goods from one point to another for hire. They should prove that they operate in more than two jurisdictions within the agreement. In addition, any power units exceeding twenty six thousand pounds in total combined weight or has two or more axels.

If a vehicle does fall into the above category but does not register with the International Registration Bureau must buy trip permits to go into a different jurisdiction. Many other vehicles are exempted from this plan. These are recreational cars, pickup and delivery vehicles for the city, cars owned by government agencies, trailers as well as buses carrying transport chartered parties.

Requirements to register vehicles under this plan are similar to those used to register in the state. One must provide proof of ownership, insurance and personal identity or date of birth. This can be done through mail addressed to the Albany office, NY or personal applications done at the main office.

The owner will be notified almost three months in advance of the expiration date. Renewals will be done after a fee payment is made. This must be done twenty days before actual expiration date to ensure that it does not affect normal business because documents arrive early. Mail renewals requires a forty-five days grace period. If possible, one can renew documents from the main office.

It is also possible to transfer registration as well as apportioned plates from one truck on to another. This is allowed because one can purchase or acquire a new commercial truck that plies the same route as their old one. All this can easily be done at the main office.
