Essential Information You Need To Know On DMV Registration

By Anna Butler

Department of Motor Vehicles or DMV are responsible for all legal requirements for vehicles including services in that place. This includes the administering of laws promoting safety and protecting consumers. They issue drivers with permits and licenses as well as their title and registration including license plates and other stuffs.

So buying a vehicle would require you to visit their offices to comply with the legal requirements. One of these is a DMV registration NY and title you need to have as soon as possible. Here are some basic tips you need to know to avoid trouble with this government agency.

Get a title every time you buy a vehicle specially if this is not a brand new one. You would be having a hard time getting a regular title from the department if you did not receive the title of the seller. There is a possibility that the seller does not possess it because the vehicle was purchased through loan and the one holding it is the lienholder which would not release it if the loan is not paid.

You must report any changes made to your address when you move to another place and the law gives you thirty days to do so. This would allow you to keep on receiving important notifications from DMV such as reminders for registration renewal and other notices. Failing to do so may make you miss these important notifications which can result into fines.

Release of liability must be filed when transferring the ownership of the vehicle or when selling it as required by the law. Any damages and injuries that the car would cause after leaving your possession would not have you liable. You do not have any liabilities too on parking tickets, storage, repair and towing charges.

Keep the license plates if you are selling the car unless the plate is the restricted one with black and white color which needs to stay. Having them removed would avoid law enforcement officers to assume that the vehicle is under your name still when pulled over. The plates can be placed on one you newly acquired so buying another is not necessary.

Provide proper identification cards during your visit in the DMV to register and it must show your legal name and identifying numbers. If a second owner appears on the document, their license and identification card numbers should be brought. If these numbers are not available, the social security number can be used instead.

You can request for a duplicate title if the original one has been lost, illegible or mutilated which makes it void. If the original one has been found then destroy it and continue using the duplicate. If the same things happen to the duplicate then you need to apply for another one as a replacement.

Make sure the signatures of every document is by the right parties involved. A person must have the same signatures in all the documents to avoid having doubts of their origin and authenticity. A document authorizing another person to sign must be presented when you will let another one to sign them for you.
