Learning More About Apologetics Ministry

By Brenda Wood

As with anything as complicated as the many ministries of Christianity and other religions that exist across the world, there are both general ways of defining such branches of religious teachings that cover it as broadly and simply as possible, and there are also much more detailed and nuanced explanations that tend to go much deeper in informing the person who wants to know more about it. When it comes to the Apologetics Ministry, hearing the simple definition of it as basically a defense of Christianity might mislead one into thinking that this is all there is to it to these types of ministries. It can be very revealing to find out all that this really entails for those who want a more in-depth explanation.

"Apologetics" is actually a quite old word, and the meaning of it has changed quite a bit since it first came around. When the ancient Greeks were using the word "apologia, " they meant it as a defensive statement that people would make in a courtroom. When one considers how people think of an apology today, there is clearly a big difference between the modern usage and the traditional one.

The Greek word "apologia" originally comes from two words, "speak" and "away." This means that the person making the defense or apologia was trying to speak away their alleged crimes. Knowing this helps a lot in trying to understand ministries like these and what exactly their teachings focus on.

The Apology is a work of Plato's that many people have heard of. It is an early example of this word being used to describe someone's defense. It refers to Socrates defending himself against allegations that his preaching of unconventional gods was illegal.

For those who are looking for cases of the word "apology" in its many different forms used in the Bible, there are plenty of examples in the New Testament. The word is always used to mean someone is defending themselves. This includes biblical figures who are trying to prove that something they did or said was justified.

Alexander was a Jew mentioned in one of Luke's books in the Bible, and he was in a situation where he had to defend himself. Idol makers were upset because Paul's preachings were threatening to destroy their business, and this caused them to start a riot. The rioters threatened Alexander, and he had to find a way to make the people see things his way.

It is common knowledge that anyone who proclaimed their belief in Jesus as the Christ and Savior in the time of Jesus' life faced very serious persecution. It is fair to say that not many people endured more persecution than the apostle Paul. There is a case of apology being used to mean defense in the Bible when Paul had to defend his proclamation of faith in Christ.

By seeing all of the different cases in which this word has been used, it becomes much easier to understand what these types of ministries are really about. Defending Christianity does not mean rejecting the findings of philosophy, history, and science. Rather, it is a way of fitting these different studies together like puzzle pieces and seeing how they work in relation to one another.
