The Growing Trends In The Grocery Supermarket Industry

By Deborah Young

Grocery stores and supermarkets are as good as the linchpins of civilization. After all, they source all our staples, essentials, and demands. They come in different types, kinds, and particulars just about anywhere and everywhere, like grocery supermarket Toronto.

There are many definitional gray areas where grocery stores and supermarkets are concerned. For example, the former mostly have to do with perishable and packaged goods. Supermarkets, on the other hand, are more expandable and comprehensive in essence. In supermarkets, you may find incorporated deli shops, pharmacies, and bakeries, among many others. Unlike standard commodity stores, non food items such as kitchenware, appliances, and wearable items like clothing, are staples here.

In Toronto, there are great many international grocery shops, or ethnic markets, that serve as the hub of immigrants in the city. For instance, there are Asian shops for all Asian groceries and house ware goods. You can get some croissants and baguettes in French bakeries, and go on and grab some pretzels at a German store.

For the types of grocery outlets, there are convenience stores. These convenient outlets are your go to places when youre in a hurry and dont like to elbow with swarms of people on the more or less cramped shops. All your immediate needs from toiletries to drinks to little snacks can be found here. They would prove lacking in your monthly errands, though, as they offer a limited selection of brands and goods.

There is also the delicatessen, which sells delicacies and fine, specially prepared food. This is where you are likely to find meat, cheese, sandwiches, pasta, salad, and other prepared and even ready to eat foods. This may also offer unusual and foreign prepared food. A greengrocer, on the other hand, is a retail trader that sells fruits and vegetables.

A supermarket is virtually the expanded version of a grocery store. This self service shop is replete with a vast array of food and household items and products, which are arranged into aisles. Aside from the usual foodstuffs, like meat, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, bakery staples, and packed goods, it also offers various household wares like dining ware, drink ware and household cleaners.

Some supermarkets are comparable to hypermarkets or superstores. These are composites of supermarkets, department stores, and specialty stocks, all collated into one. In a supermarket, you may find banks, cafes, pharmacies, customer services, and electronics shops.

Some trends that threaten these retail and wholesale businesses include the growing popularity of online grocery shopping. Canadian statistics are not as significant as that of the US, and in some polls, Canadians actually express a stronger proclivity for literal shopping. Nonetheless, its still a growing trend. There is also the challenge for these stores to satisfy the increasingly self aware and proactive customers, as more consumers are actually more demanding when it comes to better value and quality of products and services.

Nevertheless, theres still the competition and high distribution costs to contend with. In Toronto, among many other places, the number of stores is steadily increasing. Also, consumers are better proactive and aware of the trends of consumerism. For example, they readily seek convenience, demand for better products, look for cost effectiveness, and are more conscious about their health and are outspoken on product safety.
