Some Guidelines When Inspecting Used Cars

By Darelle Moore

A very important part of buying a used car is to take the time to personally check the vehicle and take it out for a test drive. Remember that you will be spending anywhere between five to fifteen thousand dollars, which is still a substantial amount of money, on a particular used auto so you have to be sure that you are going to take the time learning more about the vehicle that you are about to purchase. And for those who are first time used auto buyers, it is imperative that they seriously take a look at the vehicle they are interested in to reduce the possibility of ending up with a lemon car that will cost them even more in the coming months.

So how do you go about inspecting this used vehicle being offered you? First of all, you should do your inspection in broad daylight. Artificial lights cast shadows, concealing scratches and imperfections on the body of the car.

Make sure the car is parked on level ground so you would get a good look if the tires are even or if there is any sagging on the body of the car. You must also try to find out if there is an even wear on the tires; signs of uneven wear would indicate that there is a problem with the suspension of the car.

It would also help to check out online sites so that you can get an idea on what else to look out for in these used cars that you are planning to buy. You could also have a mechanic check the car and test drive it for you so you would get a pretty good idea with regards to the car's actual performance as this can really help you decide on the purchase. Another tip is to test drive the car on a cool engine as this would give you a better idea about the car.

Conducting some research on used car values and prices is another important item to remember before you start checking the car. It would be advisable to visit various sites to gather the information you need on used car prices, particularly for those vehicles that you are considering. This way, you can determine if the dealers or private sellers are asking you for more money than what the car is actually worth.

If you are going to buy a used car sold by a private seller, this information can come in handy because these people have a tendency to ask for more money than the prevailing market value of the vehicle. When you know how much the car is worth, this would assist you in deciding how much to negotiate or offer for the car. Make sure you will set a reasonable price for the vehicle. This would help you ease into the negotiations more smoothly and get the sellers to agree with your offer.
