Learn How Pile Drivers Are Used

By Jennifer Allen

In the construction industry there is a need for dependable heavy duty equipment. One tool that has been in existence for hundreds of years is pile drivers. There are many variations of this type of equipment that continue to be used worldwide. Understanding what this tool does also means having knowledge the many types in use.

This type of tool is a lot older than many people think. There is evidence that the tool has been used for hundreds of years. Additionally, there is evidence that the mechanical forms have been around for over 5000 years. The modern version of this tool is fashioned after a tool from the 1800s that was powered by steam.

This tool forces poles, or pipes, down into the ground. These pipes are also called piles. They are used to support the foundation of building structures. This type of device uses weights placed on poles that are lifted in air and then forced down in the ground. Construction companies have been using this kind of tool for many years.

Since its creation, there have been various types of the tool being used. The differences in the tools typically involved the type of power and the method that is used in operation. Advances in technology has allowed for recycling of the tool over time. New technologies have increased the effectiveness for use on projects that are larger scaled.

For example, the diesel fueled hammers are a variation of the driver that is made up of piston weights and cylinders. This tool functions as an oversized two stroke diesel fueled engine. It drops a weight that initiates the discharge of the fuel which causes the release of the piston. When the fuel is heated it combusts and drives the piston back and the cycle begins again. This tool can be used consistently until the project is completed.

The diesel fluid device was once more popular than it is now. The reason for the decline in use is that the equipment is very loud and impacts the environment adversely. The vertical travel lead is another tool with adjustable pistons that make it possible for use for many different projects. In the United States, this tool is standard and once played an important role in the building of railroads.

The modern version of the diesel tool is the hydraulic hammer. It is not at noisy and less hazardous to the environment. The device is specifically helpful when working on large projects. In addition, this type of hammer eliminates a lot of the pollution that is typically associated with diesel fuel. However, because the parts are constantly moving and banging, it is still noisy.

There are other tools such as the piling rig, vibrating driver extractor, and the hydraulic press in. In situations when the diesel hammer is problematic, the press in is used. A vibrating driver is used for bridge construction and piling rigs to lay foundations. This type of device is complex with a number of variations that make it a vital tool for construction.
