Modifying With Custom Wire Wheels

By Richard Morgan

One of the easiest and most effective ways to change the appearance of a vehicle is to fit custom wire wheels for cars. Whether your car is fitted with standard steel rims with covers or alloys, fitting a set of aftermarket wheels can improve its looks dramatically. There are many companies all over the world that can supply wire wheels and there are a few things to consider beforehand.

For the most popular cars and some classics these wheels can be brought off the shelf in many different variations such as colors and designs. Larger sets than the standard ones are often fitted to a vehicle and it is imperative to choose suitable rims for your particular model of car.

Another option is to purchase a used set of wheels. This is a cost effective way of modifying your car with a set costing as little as 300 dollars. Some of these used ones may need refurbishing and there are specialist companies who provide this service. Using powder coating the rims can be returned to their original chrome finish or any color that the customer chooses from around 60 dollars per wheel.

At the higher end of the market a handmade set of wire wheels can be purchased. Depending on size, finish and number of spokes these start at around 2000 dollars per set, increasing in price according to specification. The blade spinners or center caps used to secure the wheel can also be custom made an original design.

When choosing a set of aftermarket types it is important to check a few things beforehand. If the new rims are bigger than the current ones the buyer will need to check that there is enough clearance to enable the wheel to turn without touching the arch. Many vehicles may also need brakes and suspension upgrading if fitting bigger wheels.

Specialist tools may also need to be purchased when deciding to change the wheels on a vehicle. Many new sets will come complete with all the accessories needed but it is worth checking beforehand. If a repair or wheel change is needed whilst on the road the regular tools supplied with the vehicle originally will not be suitable.

Cleaning and maintaining wire wheels is another thing to take into consideration. It can take many hours to properly clean the spokes and this can sometimes be a little tricky. Many owners will use a shoelace or tear up old t shirts to wrap around the spokes for the harder to reach areas. It is also very important to occasionally remove them and clean behind to prevent any corrosion especially during periods of bad weather.

When purchasing online be aware that the after sales offered by a store or garage may not be offered. It is also good practice to seek the advice of an engineer or experienced retailer to make sure that any alterations to the car are done correctly before the new set are fitted. It is also advisable to store the set of wheels originally supplied with the vehicle should they need to be re fitted prior to changing the car in the future.
