By Carl Sullivan

Curvature of the spinal cord is often called scoliosis by medical practitioners. Although the spine is meant to be straight, it appears to be bent in some people who find it difficult to stand without bending. With proper awareness, people can take scoliosis prevention tips more seriously so as to avoid this ugly phenomenon. Maybe a better understanding of the causes and cure of curved spine will convince more people to take precaution.

There are different factors that can make people develop the curved spine. Sometimes, children get it from birth when complications arise in the womb. Usually, curved spine conditions that are caused during delivery can be corrected easily as the child grows up.

One of the forms of this disorder is termed neuromuscular. This type results from muscles and nerves that are not in their proper state. Some of the factors that could lead to the poor state of muscles and nerves include cerebral palsy, spina bifida and paralysis. Cerebral palsy affects the brain and causes impaired movement and balance such that the victim is unable to carry himself straight. Cerebral palsy itself can be caused by brain injury of the fetus during its development in the womb.

Other types of scoliosis are degenerative and idiopathic. The degenerative one may come after a major back surgery or a fatal accident that could have even claimed the person's life. A person with osteoporosis may also suffer this. On the other hand, the idiopathic type is not known to be caused by any particular thing. This has made many to conclude that this type is inherited.

There is no type of spine curvature that is easy to handle. You may notice some awkward behavior among people who have this condition especially when they are mandated to stand out in a crowd. If they are asked to deliver a lecture or address an audience, you could see how uneasy they are throughout the function.

There are a few things to check if you want to find out the possibility of having a curved spine in the future. First of all, if your shoulders do not look the same when viewed from a distance, you may suspect this to be a sign of curved spine. This is also true in the case of waists and hips. If you fail to correct the situation in time, the spinal cord will change its position and the ribs may also follow suit.

If you are concerned that you have a chance of having your spine curved or bent, it is necessary to seek immediate medical attention. What the doctor does is to perform an x-ray to determine the nature of your spine and see if it needs a correction. If it does, the doctor may suggest the use of a back brace which is worn under clothes for more than half of the day. Consistent use of back braces for months or few years has proven to be able to correct this issue.

Failure to treat this condition as soon as the symptoms begin to manifest can lead to more complications such as paralysis, chronic pain and nerve damage. Children with back pain do not find it funny especially in school when they see their mates sit comfortably for hours receiving lectures and studying privately. It may also be an avenue for infection and bleeding when the spinal cord shifts out of its position.
