Deciding Whether To Repair Or Replace Your Muffler With A Lincoln Park Auto Repair Shop

By Jamie Cudjoe

After having spent a significant amount of time on the road, your car's muffler could be exhibiting some serious signs of wear and tear.

When the engine starts to make excessively loud hissing, rattling or rumbling sounds, this likely means that the muffler is wearing out. This can also be a problem that is caused by a failing catalytic converter or a broken resonator. If you smell lots of exhaust when using your vehicle or notice that your fuel economy is starting to decrease, there could be a muffler leak. When this is the case, your muffler will have to be replaced.

If the car overheats easily, it may be because the muffler isn't doing its job. If the vehicle's temperature is unusually high after it's been running for just a few minutes, prompt auto repair service is in order.

If you'd like to visually inspect the car yourself, use a jack to elevate the vehicle and to check out its undercarriage. You need muffler service if there are holes in any portion of the exhaust, or evidence of excess water. If you spot a variety of leaks or if soot has clogged the muffler, then you will probably need to replace this component.

An auto repair technician can inspect the exhaust system to determine whether the muffler or another part is damaged. Minor holes can be fixed with a little welding. If the leak is larger than a pinhole, though, the muffler (or other damaged part) may have to be replaced. Sometimes, small components of the muffler can be fixed without replacing it altogether.

When you think that your muffler is failing, this is something that should be taken care of immediately. The longer that you delay in getting repairs, the more costly these will invariably become. When mufflers lack the ability to effectively direct exhaust away from vehicles, carbon monoxide gases can build up at their interiors which can be deadly for those within them. This is certainly the case during winter, when people tend to keep their windows up and their heaters on.
