How Slope Indicator Works Within A Hospital

By Matthew White

Medical practitioners have made their work easier in terms of storage of demographic data of their patients. This is referred to as the Slope Indicator which contains messages about the patients registration, their transfer, admission and discharge. These message transfers are the most common since they move a high amount of data.

Fifty one kinds of messages are contained within the admission, transfer and discharge range of information. The ADT messages are very necessary in the transmissions done through the HL7 since they provide a reason for the messages that are sent. In relation to the kind of trigger event, the urgency level and the speed at which the transmission is done may be different from another.

Patients or providers are able to receive information from any system within a hospital or clinic through a message feed. Constant updating of information within the systems makes the traffic of data be in a continuous movement. Some types of information which can be updated in a system include alteration of the location address, addition of the name of a next of kin and changing of a patients name.

As soon as an update is done, the data immediately flows to all the sections of that hospital or clinic where it is needed. The data transmitted can be received either through the point to point form of interface or through that interface engine. Some hospitals have connections to external laboratories, therefore information can reach such locations through the use of an interface engine.

The way a message is structured may be different in relation to the trigger event. For example, the messages may vary when there is need for an address change or when there is need for the transfer of an individual. However there are two major components that are present in either of these messages, the patients identification and the patients visit.

A patients identification outlines the identity of that person at hand and the information displayed includes name, date of birth and the national identification number. The individuals information of location is given out as the address and the mobile number. On the other hand a patients visit component gives data regarding the time and date of the previous visit and the name of that practitioner who was on duty.

When describing the message categories to be used in the interface several aspects are put into consideration. The first one is the positioning of that data within the table and considering which kind of data is necessary or optional. It is also necessary to consider whether a field may be repeated in other sections or not. Lastly, it is vital to place the value is each segments and this can be done using numbers.

The ADT messages make the connections between the computers systems within a medical facility way much simpler. Therefore, the medical procedures plans are made simpler and in turn right medical prescriptions are arrived at. There is automatic storage of these appointments already handled and thus the data can be referred to at a later date when patients pay a second visit to the hospital facility.
