Benefits And Applications Of Fava Flour In Cooking

By Mary Richardson

In today's health conscious world, many people are looking for ways to enhance their cooking with alternatives to traditional foods. The outlook for the types of foods we eat has changed because of our increase in technology and awareness of the makeup of different items. The decrease in physical activity over the last century has also caused many changes in our diets. Mixing or substituting fava flour for other items in recipes has many benefits.

The lima bean and fava bean look very similar but are different. By blanching the fava bean the outer shell is removed so the inner bean can be milled into flour. The ancient Egyptians used these beans over five thousand years ago. They are still popular throughout the world in a variety of ways.

One of the benefits is the source of protein. When protein sources are in rare supply, these are a top alternative. The beans are also rich in iron and fiber for the diet. Vegetarians, vegans, and anyone who is unable to process meat will find these will be a great addition to their cooking and baking habits.

Through medical knowledge many people find themselves unable to easily process gluten rich products. Many flours and bases for cooking are rich in gluten. Most people are able to handle gluten just fine. Many people have had chronic symptoms that were previously diagnosed as simple stomach issues. They now know they are unable to use or process gluten. Bean flours are often gluten free and can be used as a substitute for the gluten rich versions.

Many people mix or replace traditional flours with this item. Bean derivatives are known as perfect additions in any healthy diet. The flours are usually used as a mix with other types of bean based flours to replace wheat or white versions to create a gluten free meal. When mixing with other flours a quarter cup is often used for enhancement.

Breads are not the only food that can use bean based flours as a substitute. It can also be included as a gravy base, in dips, and even to thicken different types of soups. Other foods like pizza, pancakes, cakes and even cookies are great examples of foods that can be enhanced by simply mixing the flours or even replacing traditional white flours.

Like most foods, proper storage should be planned. Only some groceries include the product on the shelves regularly. Where this is not the case, a person might need to place a larger order. Regardless, storage needs should be considered ahead of time. Bean flours can be stored in the freezer for a long time to prevent spoiling.

Throughout time habits have been formed and broken. In the last couple of decades there has been an increase in obesity and as a result an increase in health concerns. Technology and increased medical knowledge has provided people with more information to make better choices. Due to more sedentary lifestyles and an increase in knowledge about the benefits of a wide variety of foods, society has become more aware of the benefits of bean based food items.
