In 1909, a bi-racial endeavor was formed to advance justice for African Americans. For, it was during this time that a group of forward thinking people began organizing what is now known as the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People, an organization which now host a National Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland with branches all over the country, including the NAACP washington pa branch.
Basically, the mission of the association is to ensure that all people, regardless of racial identity, have the same educational, economic, social and political equality and rights. The NAACP hopes that by focusing on these areas, discrimination with regards to race will eventually come to an end. On a National basis, the association remains involved in political lobbying, publicity campaigns and litigation strategies.
During the 20th century, the association expanded in an effort to consider police misconduct, black foreign refugee status and economic development. In doing so, the NAACP kept the original title in order to keep up with tradition. In addition, by including the term, colored people, the association continues to refer to anyone with African heritage and ancestry. As such, the association continues the practices and principles of the founders.
Six departments exist under the umbrella of the National association. These include, criminal justice, economic opportunity, education, environmental and climate justice, federal advocacy and health. Each of these departments host professionals which can assist individuals with regards to a specific issue. Whether African American or bi-racial, the association can provide services in relation to these and other areas.
The association has not forgotten about the African American youth of the country. For example, the NAACP provides an Olympic style competition in Afro-academics, culture, technology and science known as ACT-SO. ACT-SO is a yearlong program designed to encourage, stimulate and motivate high school cultural and academic achievement among African American high school students. For, the NAACP truly believes that these children are the future.
ACT-SO includes thirty two divisions in science, technology, engineering, math, the humanities, business, performing arts, visual arts and culinary arts. To date, over three-hundred thousand youth have participated in the program since its inception. The purpose of ACT-SO continues to be to prepare, recognize and reward people of African descent who display academic and artistic excellence.
In addition to ACT-SO, while primarily focused on civil rights, the NAACP provides annual awards to African Americans in two different categories. These include, achievement in arts and entertainment and a Spingarn Medal which is awarded for outstanding achievement of any kind. As such, any African American of any age or gender can submit an achievement or list of achievements to the association in hopes of winning a medal.
Presently, the NAACP is involved in investigating several recent events which include the burning of churches in the South, racial rhetoric within the U. S. Government, including the president and eliminating white supremacist banter which has been more prevalent following the 2016 presidential election. Beyond these concerns, the association hopes that through ongoing protests, political lobbying, planning, organizing and a great deal of personal effort, true equality will eventually come to pass for all people.
