The History Of Honeywell Avionics And What The Company Does

By Krystal Branch

Honeywell is one of the largest manufacturers of aircraft engines and avionics in the world. The company headquarters are located in Phoenix, Arizona, and the business generates more than ten billion dollars of revenue every year. It was founded by John Garrett in 1963. The organization began as a small enterprise but has grown quite large today. There is a lot of useful information you should learn about Honeywell avionics.

The company has a long history in the aviation business. They had a great boom during the Second World War, equipping bomber planes with certain avionics parts. They also invented the auto-pilot system during this time. This autopilot technology was originally kept a secret until 1943, when German forces began salvaging downed bomber planes. When the war ended the company began to focus on creating peacetime equipment. Today, they produce space equipment, auxiliary power units and turbine engines, among other things.

The company grew rapidly during the 1930s, however, many of the businesses they supplied parts to eventually developed their own sales teams, and this is when the company began to develop and manufacture aviation products. A year later the company changed its name to Garrett AiResearch Manufacturing Co. And began to design and sell its own aviation products.

In the 1950s, the company technicians began to experiment with a new device they called the electrically suspended gyroscope. This was a rotating ball that was suspended in a shell that used electrical fields. There was very little wear and tear on the device, since there was no contact between the materials. The company later acquired Sperry Aerospace, which allowed them to integrate flight controls and navigation systems in the cockpit. This helped the company to grow exponentially over the next several decades.

The company also manufactures different types of brake systems and aircraft wheels as part of its aircraft landing system business. It produces brakes for such companies as General Electric and Commercial Aircraft Corporation. This venture is expected to deliver almost five thousand planes to China during the next twenty years.

In 1951, the company was awarded a large multi-million dollar contract by the U. S. Navy to develop the black box project with its radial turbines and centrifugal compressors. This allowed the engineers of the company to develop additional testing facilities for the turbines. By the 1960s, the company controlled a large portion of the turbine market, and the designs of that time are still widely used today.

The aerospace division of the company has been involved in many major space missions over the past few decades. From 1966 to 1967, the company developed an orbital scanner program for NASA. In 1958 the company participated in the Vanguard project, which was the first successful satellite launched from earth by the U. S. In 1963, the company was involved with experiments to use giant balloons to carry cameras to high altitudes in order to study the atmosphere and its effects on photography.

Today, Honeywell avionics continues to produce many parts and equipment for aircraft. They produce turbofans in partnership with manufacturers in China such as Industrial Development Corporation, which is often called the International Turbine Engine Company. The company also works with General Electric Aircraft Engines to develop large thrust engines. This partnership is called the CFE Corporation.
