The Possible Risks Of Ethanol Transport

By Leslie Ball

The production of ethanol has increased over the years. During the year two thousand, over two billion gallons are being produced, while in two thousand eight, it reached to over nine billion gallons. By two thousand twenty two, this is expected to triple in amount. That is really huge.

There are heath and environmental concerns of these biofuels. There are dangers in ethanol transport and this can be explained through scientific investigations and results. Some of these dangers include explosions and fires caused by container leaks and spills. That is why the only recommended transport mode is through rail or barge.

One hundred percent ethanol can be produced. It can be as is or treated as an additive to fuels like gasoline. Although it is known to have good engine effects, it can pose a threat. As the two compounds combine, they are denatured. They can go to the atmosphere and mix with water vapor or directly mix with ground water. This can cause pollution especially to places where trails and barges pass containing these fuels pass by as in the community of Denmark, TN.

This biofuel has a tendency to attract vapor from the atmosphere and can easily degrade seals. If ethanol is combined with gasoline, it can burn lethally and the flame is almost invisible. This is because the two fuel compounds have very different properties, especially when it comes to electrical conductivity, solubility, boiling point, and density.

The raw product used in this production is corn. It has to be grown properly so that the resulting product will also have good properties fit for fueling vehicles. Transporting the corn to the production centers must be done carefully. The end product must be contained in trailers and properly sealed containers or else, there will be high risks of contamination and leakage.

Some other health and environmental risks include emissions that can pollute the air. This happens during the mixing, dispensing, and storage of the fuel. It can also contaminate water and kill plants and animals. In addition, when exposed to extremely hot conditions, it can explode and harm humans as well.

Rail transport of these biofuels is a public safety concern. Some of these are travelling to populous areas. If something goes wrong with the storage, they could release large quantities of poisonous fumes, which is dangerous to the health. Many are not even aware that there are already some particles of this chemical mixed with the air because it is nearly invisible.

Government agencies have been alarmed so they have come up with some detecting devices. These devices help monitor contamination. But these are only applicable to petroleum and other gases. Biofuels still do not have the appropriate devices that can support its chemical characteristics.

According to reports, petroleum has lesser damage than that of ethanol and gasoline combined. The chemical combination can cause widespread destruction because it can stay longer in the atmosphere and in water, it is more toxic, and it is more pollutant. Its carcinogenic characteristic makes it survive in air and water for longer periods than petroleum and other known commercial gases and fuels. Thus, the government must do more action regarding this.
