Incredibly Rare Gas Recall Issued By BP

By Cornelius Nunev

Recently, BP, aka British Petroleum, issued a gas recall for gas from an Indiana refinery that had been contaminated. Though contaminated fuel can play havoc with a car's power train and people should know about it, it is an incredibly rare instance.

Recalling British Petroleum gasoline

British Petroleum, otherwise known as BP, is doing a gasoline recall right now due to a batch of polluted fuel that came from a BP refinery. A ton of stations in northeast Indiana and northwest Illinois got the polluted gasoline, according to AutoBlog, and it has caused a lot of problems in automobiles. It was not enough for British Petroleum to have an oil leak; evidently it had to mess up again.

ABC Chicago explained that some motorists are reporting rough starts or their cars will not start at all.

The gas in question is from one storage decrease, and it brought on one consumer to get $1,200 in repairs. He had to have his spark plugs swapped out, his fuel lines flushed and the injectors cleaned. The regular unleaded-grade fuel was sent to Thornton's, Luke Oil, Costco, Meijer and other distributers, according to AutoBlog.

Gas damaged

Repairs for damage from polluted gasoline is not covered under warranty, so if an individual in the affected region were to take their car to, say, a Valpariso Mazda dealer, the cost is coming out of pocket. BP, according to AutoBlog, guarantees their fuel and, according to BP's fuel guarantee, they will reimburse customers for any "fuel-related repairs."

Though the gasoline recall is worrying and having a car full of gasoline that will not get the car to work while still making vehicle loans payments on is frustrating, instances of contaminated fuel and subsequent fuel recalls are fairly rare.

According to Minnesota Public Radio News, there was a refinery in Minnesota that had to issue a recall for gasoline a few years back. There was more than the 10 percent ethanol allowed in the gas, and this was causing a ton of difficulties. There have been some other instances of gasoline recalls too, such as one in August 2009 in Melbourne, Australia. According to TheMotorReport.com.au, the incident was similar to the British Petroleum fuel recall with contaminated gas.

Not an issue with motor automobile fuel generally

The fuel in your car will hardly ever get recalled. Generally a recall of fuel has to do with something else entirely. For example, fuel used for decorative torches and other devices was recalled earlier this year, according to CBS LA.

From 2000, there have only been three recalls that involved propane, according to the consumer product safety commission. There is a list of recalls for gasoline and other related goods at WeMakeItSafer.com. Fuel recalls are not common in any way.
