Looking For Antique Car Storage

By Angela Williams

A great number of people these days own and collect older classic cars. Many of these vehicles are not used for much of the year due to their rarity and high cost. A lot of owners find that they cannot keep their car at home and will want to find antique car storage to keep their vehicle locked away safely and not exposed to bad weather.

If you are just looking for a garage to store the car because it does not need special treatment there are a couple of options available to you. Asking friends and family members if they have room in their garages can sometimes be useful and saves money. Another option is to hire a lock up unit for a fixed period and pay the monthly rental fees.

There are companies that specialize in taking care of their clients cars when they are not in use. In some cases the vehicle may be stored in a lock up garage and the owner will pay rent and have full access to the car if they need it. Other firms will use warehouses for storage and an appointment may be needed to get your vehicle out should you wish to use it.

Many older and more valuable vehicles may need more care than simply locking them away. A lot of mechanics when storing a car for long periods will loosen heads and other mechanical parts to stop them from seizure. A lot of cars are also raised up a few inches to prevent any damp getting to the metal and causing rust.

Another service offered by some of the classic car storage companies is a climate controlled garage. Your car will be housed in a humidity free cocoon and kept at a constant temperature whilst it is there. This can be useful for very old fragile cars or ones that are only part restored and needing completion.

A lot of the larger car storage companies will offer additional services to make sure your vehicle is kept in good running order. Routine servicing can be done by their engineers as well as other repairs and modifications. Most reputable firms will also make sure your car is ready to drive when you collect it by ensuring it is clean and topped up with all necessary fluids.

If you are leaving your car to be stored it is imperative that the appropriate insurance policies are in place. Most companies will offer insurance cover if it is not included in their monthly fees but in some cases you may need to arrange additional cover. Cars are usually assessed when dropped off and any defects noted and pointed out to the owners.

When leaving a vehicle for long periods it is important to remove any personal items and anything that can be removed such as audio systems. Trunks should be emptied and ideally the car should be cleaned before putting it into storage. Many companies will also remove the battery to prevent it from running down and causing damage to the electrical system of your car.
