At 93 Years Old, Woman Says Driving Days Are Done

By Cornelius Nunev

Rachel Veitch, one of the nation's oldest drivers, has been driving the same vehicle since 1964. But time changes everything, and last week, Veitch told the media that she has driven her last.

Put a ton of miles on it

The 48 year old Mercury Comet Caliente has been driven by 93 year old Florida resident Veitch for quite a while. It has over 576,000 miles on it, which is enough to get to the moon and back. She is calling it quits with driving now though since she has lost some vision and ran a red light earlier in the month.

Media spotlight

Veitch was on the Tonight show with Jay Leno a couple of years back after the Chariot got over 559,000 miles on it. The retired nurse explained that the car had made it through 18 batteries, eight mufflers, three sets of shocks and three husbands.

Veitch did not get hurt in the one and only accident her Chariot went through. It was a rear-end collision that occurred in 1980.

Did a good job of taking care of it

The Chariot cost Veitch $3,289 in the winter of 1964. She has kept it in immaculate condition and kept complete records of everything, maintenance-wise. Her devotion to the Chariot is no doubt the secret to its longevity.

Future of Chariot uncertain

The true question is where the Chariot will go from here. Veitch is happy about putting it down to rest:

The Chariot will go to Wisconsin to be part of an automobile show in July. Then Veitch is toying with the idea of asking fellow car-aficionado Jay Leno to make her an offer.
